Diabetic foot reconstruction
Specialist assessment and reconstruction for selected complex diabetic foot wounds, considered within a multidisciplinary limb-preservation pathway.
Overview
An individual approach
Complex diabetic foot wounds demand more than wound closure alone. Careful assessment of infection, circulation, pressure, sensation, bone and the patient’s wider health informs whether reconstruction may offer a durable route towards healing and limb preservation.
Reconstructive surgery is one part of a coordinated treatment plan. Not every wound is suitable for reconstruction, and recommendations are made only after individual assessment. This page is not a route for urgent diabetic foot problems; patients with a new or worsening wound should contact their existing diabetic-foot team, GP or urgent NHS service promptly.
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust
Working at the forefront of limb preservation
At Imperial College Healthcare, Mr Mohan and consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon Mr Kshem Yapa specialise in complex soft-tissue reconstruction and limb salvage. Their work applies reconstructive plastic surgery techniques to selected complex diabetic foot ulcers, where achieving healthy, durable tissue cover may create an opportunity for healing and rehabilitation.
This work sits within multidisciplinary care: plastic surgery is considered alongside diabetes management, vascular assessment, infection control, orthopaedic input, pressure relief and specialist wound care. The aim is to preserve the limb and support a return towards normal life where this is clinically achievable.
