What does this operation involve?

A standard abdominoplasty removes lower-abdominal skin, redrapes the remaining tissue and brings the umbilicus through a new opening. Separation or laxity of the abdominal muscles can be repaired when appropriate. The design is individualised to balance contour improvement, scar position and safe tissue handling.

01

When it may be considered

  • Loose or overhanging abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight change
  • Abdominal-wall laxity or rectus separation identified on assessment
  • Concerns extending above and below the umbilicus
02

Your operation

  • A low transverse scar whose length reflects the amount of tissue excess
  • Redraping of the abdominal skin and creation of a new umbilical opening
  • Muscle repair and complementary liposuction may be considered where appropriate
03

Recovery and aftercare

  • A flexed posture and regular gentle walking are commonly advised initially
  • Compression, wound care and thrombosis prevention are tailored to the individual
  • Strenuous exercise and lifting are reintroduced gradually after review

Designed around your anatomy.

The distribution of skin and tissue excess, abdominal-wall strength, previous scars, weight change, general health and the outcome you hope to achieve are assessed together.

You will receive a clear explanation of the proposed scar, whether muscle repair or liposuction may be appropriate, material risks, alternatives and the expected recovery before deciding how to proceed.

Useful information

01Where will the scar sit?+

The scar is planned as low as anatomy and safety allow, but its precise position and length vary. This is discussed and marked before surgery.

02Is muscle repair always required?+

No. Muscle repair is recommended only when examination supports it and the expected benefit justifies the additional intervention.

03Will the procedure remove all stretch marks?+

Only stretch marks located within the skin that is removed will be excised. Remaining marks may move position but will not be eliminated.

This information is general and does not replace an individual consultation. The most appropriate operation, scar pattern and recovery plan depend on your anatomy, health and personal circumstances. Results cannot be guaranteed.
